One sport, one child

Sometimes, children ask me "What football team do you support?" (Some adults ask it too, but it tends to be less frequent)

I always claim to be a Real Madrid supporter. I suppose that I chose it when I was a child because it seemed to me one of the winners (and when you are a child it is important for you to go with the winners)

Later, I learnt that when you have made a decision, others don´t trust you if you change it afterwards.

When I played football, at first, I wanted to be in the same team as my friends. But we were very bad players. One day, during the act of choosing the players, I was one of the two who was supposed to decide the players in each team. That day, I preferred to try making a solid, winner team. - and I didn´t choose my friends - After that, they got angry with me for a few days.
And I had to assume that, generally speaking, it´s better to keep the same jacket.

So I have maintained the option untill now. I don´t want to waste time about thinking in a new one, so I´m going to continue supporting Real Madrid for the moment.

But I don´t really mind if they win or lose. I mean, I prefer them to win, but neither feel sad if they lose nor planificate my agenda according to the matches . I´m not an "active fan", if you want to define it in some way.

My feelings aren´t managed by what eleven men do in 90 minutes. There are more important things to worry seriously about. The important ones are few, and it seems to me they are not linked with unknown people.

And speaking about the agenda theme: At weekends, I try to stay at home the less time possible. In my opinion, if there is a whole world waiting for you out there, why not to go and have a look? Besides, I always prefer to play football myself than watching it (and I am still a bad player, but I enjoy it.) OK, you´ll tell me: When you need to rest, the best is simply to stay at home laying at the sofa, maybe reading, watching TV or simply doing nothing. But I tend to feel it as a waste of time: I would pick a book and enjoy at night, not during the day. (The sun is calling you outside!)

So, what is my final conclusion? That I could look for another jacket, and be at home watching the TV, but I wouldn´t stand it for long, so I´m going to avoid it as much as possible! :)

Save Tonight... through the window

Which one do you prefer?

Go on and close the curtains
'cause all we need is candlelight
you and me ... and the bottle of wine
and hold you tonight [ ohh ]

Ain´t got no curtains
Candles are dangerous, I really prefer a light
Alcohol is old-fashioned (let´s take a coke)
hold you (
why not?) tight,

well we know I'm going away
and how I wish - I wish it weren't so
so take this wine and drink with me
let's delay our misery

Yes, I know that the train will leave (with me inside)
You really mean weren´t so?

Let´s get drunk
and tomorrow all the miserys
will fall into oblivion

save tonight and fight the break of dawn
come tomorrow - tomorrow I'll be gone
save tonight and fight the break of dawn
come tomorrow - tomorrow I'll be gone

save all nights, in your memory
they will hurt as a recent wound
I love to fight
but this is a lost battle
why must I do the effort?

there's a log on the fire
and it burns like me for you
tomorrow comes with one desire
to take me away [ ohh it's true ]

I enjoy, big fires
lets put, more wood on it
the next day hasn´t desires
it´s only me, that´s one more excuse
[is it really true?]

It ain't easy to say good bye
darling please - don't start to cry
'cause girl you know I've got to go [ohh ]
and Lord I wish it wasn't so

It´s difficult to leave you in the past
baby cry, if you want
I´ve already decided it, and you can´t change my mind
If you wish me to stay, sleep and dream

save tonight and fight the break of dawn
come tomorrow - tomorrow I'll be gone
save tonight and fight the break of dawn
come tomorrow - tomorrow I'll be gone

save all nights, in your memory
put a lock in that mental door
this illusion will finish,
this illusion is going to vanish in the dawn

tomorrow comes to take me away
I wish that I - that I could stay
but girl you know I've got to go [ohh ]
and Lord I wish wasn't so

Tomorrow is just another day
It´s a decision I cannot delay
I have to change myself

I must grow in other place

save tonight and fight the break of dawn
come tomorrow - tomorrow I'll be gone [ 4x ]

save all nights, but only if you want
cos tomorrow, the heart will run aground

tomorrow I'll be gone [ 4x ]

your sorrow won´t be gone
our sorrow won´t be gone
my sorrow won´t be gone
tomorrow I´ll be a new one

save tonight [ 4x ]

save all nights
is it right?
It doesn´t hurt my mind
just save all nights

oh that´s right
save tonight - save tonight

Looking for answers

I´ve been wondering if it would be worthy to write something "green and ecological". After considering it for a while, I concluded that it is!, why not? So let´s start! Today, (October, the 15th) it is the "Blog Action Day", and this year it is about the Environment.

But, what does this mean? That many people around the world are doing and writing things related to the Environment. Then, I also want to support it in my own way.

So the objective is surely clear. And speaking about the execution, how can I approach it? Maybe, I could recommend a few tips to save energy at home. Or better, explain if I think or not that our oceans should be protected more, or the famous ozone layer... But I don´t want really to "speak". I want you to speak. So I am going to make the questions!

My aim is to promote the debate. Some people think that it isn´t necessary to care in an obssesive way about the environment. Others are predicting the world´s end in a few years, if we don´t change our way of living. Is ecology a fashion subject nowadays? Or, on the other hand, is it a serious one? The more is talked about, the better. I do believe that showing information and exchanging view points, is great to try to understand the world where we live.

So, here we go. A few questions. Read them, and try a bit of trivia: Ask them to others, try to answer some of them yourself, and let´s start talking!

  • How much do you pay for light´s bill? Do you want to pay less? Do you know how to?
  • Where is now or where do you think it could be the last bottle you threw into the garbage? It may be now in a dump, or reduced to small pieces being a new bottle, or maybe it is being used by someone else as a vase... What other ideas do you have?
  • Supossing it´s raining, and you have to go nearby to buy some things (not very big neither heavy), would you take the car to the shop?
  • If I throw a few things to a desert from a plane, where only one person lives (a piece of paper, a human´s body, and bottle made of glass) which one will be more useful to that hypothetic person? Which one could be found by archaeologists in the future?
  • Will you vote to close down all nuclear instalations of your country if your electric bill would increase a 100%?
  • How far are the paper, glass, yellow... containers from your home, if there are any?
  • Are you aware of how a plant grows? How many trees are there around your home? Do you know what kind they are?
  • Do you think that the climate is really changing? Have you realised something you think that could be related in your sourrondings? or not?
  • How many people in your family don´t have a car?
  • How many people in your family take less than 20 minutes to get to their job places?
Well, that´s all by now. The list of questions is long, and could be longer. I´ll save some for future reflexions :) As you see, all of them could be related, in one way or another, to the environment. So I just finish with the last question:

Can a single person do something to change
and improve "how things work"?

Winged

I

A funny smile,
a grinning demon,
a defiant gesture,

Why did you call me?

A remote island,
an isolated space,
a burning wish...
...and there, me.
Asking everywhere,
praying,
searching
for dreams,
"when someone knows
how to fly

should he keep the secret?
Definitely, not." - I cry.
If you lend me your powers, I´ll try touching the sky
...and if I fall,
the beauty of the view

will heal the wounds...

I won´t tell you how.

but, why?
You are able
to teach me
and also have the might.
what do you want in reward?

You cannot offer me anything,
poor little man.
But I can advice you:
If you really want to fly,
be aware of hostile winds,
fallen angels and broken dreams.

I can fight them, sir
I have been training
my mind,
I do not fear an ambush
I am in peace,
the request is powerful but
I only have that wish.

You really
do not need wings

Have not realised
that you could make
your own ones?

Maybe he´s right...
let´s try without his help,
and when I finally
breath the clouds smell,
my soul will totally rest

and the dream will end.

Walking and hiking at night... but without torch

A Spanish group of people wakes up early. Then, they walk through Narvik, untill the dock (with autopilot mode ON, of course, because their eyes want to sleep more!). There, they would get on a boat...
I was in that group, I was part of them. And I know what we did that summer :)

We arrived by boat to a small Norwegian village located at the Lofoten Islands (an archipielago at the Arctic Circle.) The trip was fun. There were some clouds, the wind blowed, but the sun shined. So we stayed on the deck of the boat enjoying the beautiful landscapes around us. Mountains arised from the deep of the sea, which was totally calm. The contrast between blues and greens hypnotized us.

After the arrival, we asked at the tourism information office where we could stay. They recommended us a camping that had wooden houses. It was about three kilometres long from there, but it seemed to be ok and cheap. So we picked up our stuff and went to that place.

Next, we walked less than one hour, we arrived and talked with the boy in the camping to arrange our accommodation. He gave us the key of the "hut". When we finally realised that the hut was an enormous house, with balcony, two floors, and surrounded by nature, we really felt in heaven. The conclusion was unanimous: That was the best place where we had stayed in all the trip. But the best was yet to come.

We were very happy about having arrived there and finding such a great place. The previous day, we weren´t sure about if it was worthy to pick the boat to go there. But yes, it was a paradise. I have known different kinds of islands, and Lofoten´s have some kind of celtic magic.

Someone prososed to go for a walk. And the rest answered: why not? We had been told that during the night there was light enough to see. But I have to confess, that until I didn´t see it with my own eyes, I couldn´t believe it. We hadn´t have dinner, only rested for a while. So we made some sandwiches to eat them during the walk.

The group started to move and walked behind the camping, towards a small near mountain. We found an easy path and followed it. The vegetation was abundant: Trees and bushes, all of them made of glowing green. After a while, we found a small artificial "lake", made to provide water to Svolvær, I supposed. From there, we took a lot of photos, like this one.

Please do Take a moment to have a look at the photo. It was taken a bit later than midnight, in August. And I want to emphasize it: It was at night, but it didn´t seem to be that hour. When I remember it, It still amazes me. If I have to explain to someone the situation, I use to define it as a dawn that didn´t want to finish with night. In fact, the less light that we could see was similar to what I would call a nightfall.

After that, we went on walking uphill. The path was now "on the mountain", more difficult than previously. We continued moving untill somenone suggested to have dinner. In fact, it was one in the morning and we were hungry. So we found a place to rest and sit down. And there, we ate our sandwiches. All was quiet, we only heard our own voices. I felt part of Nature.

We finally came back to the camping. The return was easier and faster, because we wanted to rest. I found myself tired, but very pleased. That night we had to put towels at the windows to avoid the light entering into the house, but in spite of that, I slept very well.

Thank you for coming with me. It was a pleasure. We argued, we passed through difficult situations, but the memories are equally great!

Far above the clouds

A plane travelling to somewhere. Outside, the air is around -70 ºC. Althought I´m comfortably seated looking through the window, I can feel the cold by touching the glass. When I realise that I have never experimented such a low temperature, I say to myself that it will be better to avoid it. (Today, I´m not carrying my cup and winter gloves!)

I´m getting bored, and I have to be still one more hour inside. If I could sleep, I would, so time´d get evaporated, the plane´d arrive and I would be happy. But today, a little one year girl, doesn´t want to get asleep. She is very curious, and looks at me constantly. I tried reading a newspaper, and she wanted too. I suppose that she must be some kind of genious, because althought she didn´t speak, she seemed to be reading it!

I was thinking about that, when the mother asked me to take care of her while she went to the bathroom. Ok, I said. (Without having a remote idea that a storm was near.) I picked her in my arms, but at the moment the baby realised that her mother had left, and started to cry.

She wasn´t heard by the pilot, but the rest of the passengers did. She thought that mom had vanished, and feared not to see her again.

I did my best to stop her crying. At first, I explained her that mummy wasn´t lost. Then, I rocked her. After that, improvised a song. But my efforts had no reward. She continued shouting more and more loudly. And finally, after five endless minutes, mom came back, picked her, and calmly, she said:
And the man in the rain picked up his bag of secrets, and journeyed up the mountainside, far above the clouds, and nothing was ever heard from him again, except for the sound of Tubular Bells."
Mike Oldfield - Far above the clouds.

And the little girl (and I), felt asleep.

Car Failure

Autumm arrived some days ago. Season for rains, flus and vaccines. People can get vaccinated, but not cars. And my car cought a cold! Therefore, something had been broken inside. It was kind enough to warn me, ligthing this little signal. But I didn´t know exactly what was wrong.

Well, there were other signs: It didn´t accelerate well (fastly) and it gave jerks. Neither the CO2 emissions were appropiate (as the people at the ITV told me.)

So, here is a little quiz, for those of you who would like to find out what happened to my car. An extra clue: The problem was solved by replacing only one part.

Have you thought a little about it? Let´s have a look to a little explanation:
  • The engine needs mainly two things to work: Fuel and air. But the proportion between them is very important. It has to be an exact rate depending on the requirements, to achieve good fuel consumptions, low CO2 emissions and an appropiate performance.
  • In modern cars, the device that informs the engine about the quantity of oxygen needed is the "oxigen sensor" or also called "lambda sond". This part was the origin of the misfunction.
I carried the car to the garage. The mechanic used a hand-held tester to figure out the problem. It told him that two different parts could be wrong. After checking the spark plugs (they were in order), he concluded that the oxygen sensor was the cause of the failure. They hadn´t the spare part there. Then, we ordered other and the next day he changed it.

Althougt it is a little gadget, it´s expensive. In my case, it lasted for about 140.000 Km without being replaced. That seems to me a good average. I hope that the new one would last for other 140.000 more!

Now, the perfomance has come back to the usual rate. Finally, I can trust on it to overtake with guarantees.

Learning how to...

... fly a traction kite.

On Saturday, I had the opportunity to experiment with the kite that you see on the photo. My cousin have bought it recently, and we went to a park and tried it.

This is a four-meter drag kite. And what does this mean?
  • It is called a foil kite or parafoil. Here is a good definition: "a soft kite , consisting of a number of cells running fore to aft, some or all of which are open at the front to allow air to inflate the kite." (Thanks to wikipedia TM) :)
  • This kind of "flying element" is big. It is easily seen in the distance. There are bigger ones, but its size is enough to pull you.
  • Pull you? Yes! That is its main purpose. People use them to jump, carry them (with skies, snowboards, skateboards and this type of stuff) "Due to the amount of power that these kites can generate, they can be used for a number of different activities including kitesurfing, kiteboarding on land, snowkiting, kite bugging and recreational kiting."
  • It carries four lines or wires. Two of them are the main controls. The other two are the brakes.
  • A great advantage is that, it hasn´t rigid stuff, so although during the fligth is a four meter long thing, it easily fits in a small bag. Moreover, the assembly and disassembly is very fast.
It was my first time with this kind of kite. I had "piloted" acrobatic smaller ones, but the sensations were totally different. When you begin flying it, it seems that it wants to "take you off". But once that I realised how to dominate the force (and the brakes), the fun started.

There is an angle range where it really shows the force (between 45 to 70 degrees from the horizontal) that it can develop. If you maintain it at this position for long, your arms will get tired quickly. So its better to combine it with the "top position". This is the highest point that the kite can reach, and it keeps more or less stabilized, without pulling you much.

So I learnt the basis, and I started spinning it. First to one side, then to other. At this point, I was losing the initial fear. The kite started pulling me with force, and I was carried about twenty meters from the initial point. (I have to say that we were on a grass ground, so it was as if you did some kind of grass-skying.) ;)
The wind wasn´t blowing at high speed, but I could made a couple of short jumps. I felt that it is a short bite of the sensations of flying. And I want more!

In conclusion: I had such a great time, so I´m now considering to buy my own one. Maybe this weekend. I will keep you informed... What about trying it at "El Médano"?
